For Denver-based RK Mechanical Inc., part of being a world-class business involves constantly innovating and that includes making the workplace as safe and healthy as possible.
That means having a wellness strategy that includes offering discounted gym memberships, employing a full-time wellness coach and no doughnuts at meetings.
“We have a world-class company, and you can’t do that without having world-class people,” said Rick Kinning, RK Mechanical’s chairman and CEO. “We truly care about people. … Having a healthy workplace is part of our culture.”
“It just seems like the right thing to do,” Jon Kinning, RK’s chief operating officer, said of the company’s health and wellness efforts.
The family-owned business, with roughly 1,100 employees, is a full-service plumbing, mechanical and process piping contractor. Process piping is a type of pipework used to move materials such as chemicals and natural gas in industrial processes and manufacturing. RK’s local projects vary from the Spire condominiums and 1800 Larimer office building in downtown Denver to the University of Colorado Boulder’s Recreation Center renovation, but it’s also handled assignments in Germany, Portugal and Taiwan.
