The Eye and the Horizon (After Monet)

Ellipse I (East 29thAvenue and Xenia Street)

Artist: Ilan Averbuch (Long Island City, NY)

Commission: $100,000

Installed: 2006

Echoing the ellipse itself, the 15’ high stone eye shape and a horizontal line of stones and steel rods create an enormous frame for the surrounding neighborhood images. The large empty space within the sculpture allows the viewer to observe changes in the immediate environment as he or she moves along the sculpture. Fabricated from recycled stone and steel, this sculpture speaks to transformation from airport to neighborhood and emphasizes sustainability.
