Don’t Lose Your Memories Forever!

Karen Rubin's biggest message to parents and others is to print photos: “Most people have thousands of pictures on their cell phones or digital camera that will eventually be lost forever.” Portraits provide priceless memories.

Rubin, owner of Karen Rubin Photography, received her Master of Photography degree from the Professional Photographer's of America (PPA).  She also holds the industry's Photographic Craftsman degree and is a Certified Professional Photographer.  Rubin is a Colorado councilor for PPA, the largest non-profit association for professional photographers in the world.

Rubin used to be a nurse, but began photographing her son when he was born. Her healthcare colleagues noticed her talent and Rubin took the leap into a second calling. That was 27 years ago and at that time, “there were no dedicated children’s photographers in Denver,” she said.

It all started with a home studio and $5,000 in 1984: “I still have a set of lights that I bought 27 years ago,” Rubin said. The studio moved from her previous location on Parker Road to The Shops at Northfield Stapleton in 2007. Rubin wanted more of an urban setting when she moved her studio and “liked the energy at Northfield.”

She has been photographing families for more than 20 years, often capturing the next generation and extended family: “My goal is to find out what they want and help them get it,” specific to that moment in their life. Rubin’s studio environment offers the opportunity to “do something the parents can’t do themselves,” she said.

The “Baby Plan” was introduced in 2008: “When the economy crashed, I wasn’t having a problem, but I was freaking out, thinking I was going to have a problem,” she said. Baby Plan members receive three studio sessions in the baby's first 13 months. Additional and extended family members are welcome to be in the photos at no additional charge. Each session includes a design consultation, either over the phone or in person, and one view & order appointment in the private screening room.

Rubin also photographs celebrities such as Rockies players. “I used to be star struck, but really – they’re all just people.”

Her business is built on relationships: “I get to know my clients so well … I think part of it is they’re comfortable with me.”
