Denver Honors Champions in Recycling and Litter Prevention
Denver’s Department of Public Works/Solid Waste Management annually honors individuals, groups and businesses that stepped forward to help promote and maintain a cleaner, safer and more livable community. This year honorees are true champions in recycling and litter prevention.

WASTEWISE Awards honor individual or group efforts that promote and enable the solid waste collection services of Denver Solid Waste Management. The 2006 recipients are:

• The Lowry Litter League has gotten together every Friday for the past six years to collect litter along side the streets of Lowry helping to keep the neighborhood clean.
• Sloan's Lake Neighborhood Association arranged several lake clean up events in 2006 removing more than 4 tons trash from Sloan’s Lake Park.
• Anthony Thomas is a long time member of the Civic Association of Clayton and supporter of Keep Denver Beautiful. Mr. Thomas coordinates the annual neighborhood clean-up for Clayton and other surrounding neighborhoods.

YOUTHWISE Awards honor the outstanding efforts of young people under the age of 18 years old for their commitment in the areas of graffiti abatement, recycling, reducing illegal dumping, trash or litter abatement. The 2006 recipient is:

• John Fleming’s Special Education Classroom (Centennial K-8 School) collects recyclables throughout the school everyday, recycling hundreds of pounds of material each week. The class is made up of six dedicated students with various disabilities.

THREE R Awards honor the volunteers, groups and organizations that have made valuable contributions to the Denver Recycles program. The 2006 recipients are:

• Forest City Stapleton is honored for efforts supporting recycling in Denver. Forest City Stapleton promoted recycling throughout the year in their monthly newsletter, website and visitors’ center as well as added special support with the new cart deliveries to Stapleton in October 2006.

• Sally Kurtzman is honored for her efforts as an avid recycling volunteer. “Second Life for Stuff” is a free booklet listing where to recycle many household goods that Mrs. Kurtzman prints and circulates to Denver residents. Also, Mrs. Kurtzman is continually providing recycling information via newspapers, radio, television, and in presentations to school groups.

• 630 KHOW is honored as a corporate supporter of recycling by promoting the Denver Recycles program on the radio.

• 9News is honored as a corporate supporter of recycling by promoting the Denver Recycles program on television.
